Ok... So I have no idea what was going wrong here. But I decided to 
re-download the got tree from scratch and rebuild it since the tool was 
miss behaving in a variety of ways. Tentatively the fresh tree is 
working correctly; i'm not certain if there was interference with the 
version installed from packages.

Tentatively I think something was borked with my setup; it seems to work 
with a fresh tree.

Dunno what's up with that. Sorry for noise.
