It worked out for web browsers which already have the well-known
location ~/Downloads to write files to. For text tools like tog
there is no such directory, unfortunately. If there was one then
using it would be a fine solution.

I appreciate that you are taking the time to raise such points.
At the very least it makes us reconsider our assumptions to make
sure we know why we are making certain decisions. In the best
case it catches bad design ideas and allows us to correct them.
