    That's because you don't need to use bmake in -portable.  If anything,
    I suspect that wouldn't work.
    
    Could you tell us what commands you're running, using GNU Make?  For
    example, the following will work:
    
    ./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && sudo make install
    make tests
