quite the long read ;-)

I can't say I double-checked everything, especially the dprintf(3) maths
-- I understand how critical they are, but I just couldn't -- as
discussed on IRC I'd like to try to use the templating system to
generate those files, so at least we don't have to maintain all those
checks.

I've spotted some minor nits, but I won't bother you for this, the diff
is ok op@.  Thanks!
